Enjoying the event, that was the top priority for the majority of participants in Bruges on Sunday morning and afternoon. The mild and dry autumn weather created the ideal conditions for those who wanted to run the full or half marathon or walk a half marathon or 8 km. There was a remarkable number of foreigners among the 5,200 participants, who had undoubtedly been attracted by the unique Unesco World Heritage marathon setting.
Among the top athletes, Tim Calliauw confirmed his position as favourite. He was the first to cross the line after 2hrs21:46 and that made him nearly two minutes faster than Willem Van Schuerbeeck (2.23:31). Jan Vervaet completed the podium (2.26:52). Calliauw was able to count on luxury hare Koen Naert who had made a conscious decision to appear at the start in that role and launched Calliauw at km 32.
The West-Vlaamse Alliantie, a select training group that is part of Olympic Brugge and lead by trainer Stijn Fincioen, was the boss of its own shire. In the women’s race, Saartje Speleers from Bredene was the best in 2.53:04. In the half marathon, victory went to Ward Van Der Kelen, who came fifth in the 10Miles only last week. Van Der Kelen finished in 1.06:50 and came in no fewer than five minutes ahead of the second finisher. Heidi Van Maele was the first woman in 1.28:42.
Title partner Athora had more than 200 of its own employees at the start, including CEO Dorsan van Hecke. Over 1,000 walkers also took part this year, they either walked a half marathon or opted for the 8k family walk. Just like all the other participants, they also enjoyed the culinary treats at the food market after the finish and the free Brugse Zot.
